The “Institut für Weltkirche und Mission” (Institute for the Global Church and Mission) wants to encourage scholars from different academic disciplines to reflect on the role and mission of the Church in the context of the current global health challenges. From its beginnings, missionary activity has included care for the sick and work in the field of health care; therefore, one of our research focuses is „Mission and Health“ within which this conference is organized.
Theological studies on bioethical and medical issues are generally oriented toward either classical bioethical topics or clinical ethics while the broader aspect of the health of the population(s) often remains neglected. Public and global health have not yet found a significant place in theological discourse. On the other hand, the Covid-19 pandemic has shown how interconnected people and nations are. It has become evident that national public health impacts global health and vice versa. This situation has inspired a lot of studies and conferences regarding the ethical, social and medical challenges of a global pandemic. Nevertheless, there is still a notable gap in the reflection on the role of the Catholic Church in both public and global health.
This conference wants to bring out some of the current health challenges in public and global health. By connecting experts from different fields of research and practice we hope to stimulate further reflection and exchange concerning the possibilities of Church engagement in this field.
The program will encompass broad area of health sciences and theology such as public and global health, moral theology, bioethics, health pastoral, missiology and social engagement of the Church.

El Instituto para la Iglesia Universal y la Misión invita a estudiosos de diferentes disciplinas a reflexionar sobre el papel y la misión de la Iglesia en el contexto de los actuales desafíos de la salud a nivel mundial. Desde sus inicios, la actividad misionera ha incluido el cuidado de los enfermos y ha trabajado en el ámbito del cuidado de la salud; por eso uno de los enfoques de investigación de nuestro Instituto es justamente „Misión y Salud“, del cual hace parte la realización de esta conferencia.
Los estudios teológicos sobre cuestiones de bioética y medicina generalmente son orientados hacia los temas clásicos de la bioética o hacia la ética clínica como tal, mientras que el aspecto más amplio de la salud de la población suele descuidarse. La salud pública y global aún no ha encontrado un lugar significativo en el discurso teológico. Por otra parte, la pandemia del Covid 19 ha demostrado lo interconectados que están las personas y las naciones. La repercusión de la salud pública nacional en la salud mundial, y viceversa, ha quedado en evidencia. A pesar de que esta situación ha inspirado numerosos estudios y conferencias sobre los desafíos éticos, sociales y médicos de lo que implica una pandemia global, aún sigue existiendo un notable vacío en la reflexión sobre el papel de la Iglesia católica en la salud pública y global.
Por eso esta conferencia quiere poner sobre la mesa algunos de los retos sanitarios actuales en materia de salud pública y global. Al poner en contacto a expertos de diferentes campos de la investigación y la práctica, esperamos estimular la reflexión y el intercambio sobre las posibilidades de compromiso de la Iglesia en este campo.
El programa abarcará un amplio espectro dentro de las ciencias de la salud y la teología, como la salud pública y global, la teología moral, la bioética, la asistencia pastoral, la misionología y el compromiso social de la iglesia.
La conferencia tendrá lugar de manera virtual. En breve se ofrecerá información detallada al respecto.

Das Institut für Weltkirche und Mission möchte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen dazu anregen, die Rolle und den Auftrag der Kirche im Gesundheitswesen im Kontext der aktuellen globalen Herausforderungen im Gesundheitswesen zu reflektieren. Seit ihren Anfängen umfasst die missionarische Tätigkeit auch die Krankenpflege und die Arbeit im Bereich der Gesundheitsversorgung; daher ist einer unserer Forschungsschwerpunkte „Mission und Gesundheit“, innerhalb dessen diese Konferenz organisiert wird.
Theologische Studien zu bioethischen und medizinischen Fragen sind im Allgemeinen entweder auf klassische bioethische Themen oder auf die klinische Ethik ausgerichtet, während der umfassendere Aspekt der Gesundheit der Bevölkerung(en) oft vernachlässigt wird. Öffentliche und globale Gesundheit haben noch keinen bedeutenden Platz im theologischen Diskurs gefunden. Andererseits hat die Covid-19-Pandemie gezeigt, wie sehr Menschen und Nationen miteinander verbunden sind. Die Auswirkungen der nationalen öffentlichen Gesundheit auf die globale Gesundheit und umgekehrt sind deutlich geworden. Diese Konferenz möchte einige der aktuellen gesundheitlichen Herausforderungen im Bereich der öffentlichen und globalen Gesundheit beleuchten. Indem wir Experten aus verschiedenen Bereichen der Forschung und Praxis zusammenbringen, hoffen wir, weitere Überlegungen und einen Austausch über die Möglichkeiten des kirchlichen Engagements in diesem Bereich anzuregen.
Das Programm wird ein breites Spektrum innerhalb der Gesundheitswissenschaften und der Theologie umfassen, wie öffentliche und globale Gesundheit, Moraltheologie, Bioethik, Gesundheitspastoral, Missionswissenschaft und soziales Engagement der Kirche.
